THE THRILL OF CLIMBING ON ICE

Have you ever tried a truly extreme winter sport? Ever heard of ice climbing? The word climbing makes you immediately think of a challenging rocky wall, but what about climbing up a wall of ice! We’re sure you’ve probably seen athletes clinging to a waterfall of ice as they try to reach the top.

It's interesting how a freezing cold wall of ice can be so exciting and thrilling to climb. An activity in close contact with nature for an extremely intense adrenaline rush.

Of course this isn't an activity that we recommend everyone should try. Ice climbing requires care and caution. Therefore, before you decide to start off on an ice climbing adventure you should always contact the Val di Sole Mountain Guides, that in addition to organizing these types of activities in complete safety, they can also provide important technical information and specific information on ice conditions.

In Val di Rabbi, the area where the Valorz Waterfalls are located can be described as a natural outdoor amphitheatre. A paradise for ice climbers:10 cascades, with vertical drops that range from 80 to 250 meters and with a 45° to 90° slope gradient, creating numerous routes with different difficulty grades that make this one of the most unique climbing destinations in the Alpine area. If you look to the left of the town of San Bernardo, you can clearly see the Valorz valley.

The east side (orographic left side) of the Valorz valley is subject to avalanche hazard, therefore it's extremely important that climbers have the proper skills and knowledge to evaluate if there is an actual avalanche risk due to recent snowfalls, high altitude wind or temperature inversion. This is also why it’s important to consult or ask to be accompanied by a mountain guide.

THE MAIN WATERFALL «CASCATA MADRE»

Located at the centre of the Valorz valley, it is the largest waterfall of the entire valley with a height of 250 m and a width of 50 m. There are various routes, with moderate difficulty grades and that’s exactly why this is a popular climbing area. Most climbers follow the route on the right side that has a 65° slope gradient along the first 50 meters, then towards the centre it has a 70° gradient and then once again towards the right with short 80° sections until you exit the climb.

WATERFALLS IN VAL DI SOLE

When talking about waterfalls in Val di Sole, the Valorz waterfall immediately comes to mind, since it’s the most popular ice climbing area in the valley. But the Valorz waterfall is just one of the valley’s numerous ice climbing spots.  Val di Sole, with almost 40 frozen waterfalls to climb and various difficulty grades, is the perfect place for beginners to discover and to learn more about this fantastic sport. The following is a description of just two of the top waterfalls for ice climbing.

CASCATA GRANDE & SALTO ALTO

Located in the area called Valpiana, just above the town of Ossana, this waterfall combined with the «Salto Alto» waterfall is one of the most striking waterfalls in Val di Sole, considering its length and technical characteristics. There are other waterfalls also located in this area.

CASCATA SALTO DEI CEMBRI

In Val di Peio, in the area called Val Lamare, there are 8 waterfalls with moderate difficulty grades, that are all clearly visible and that can be easily reached from the road that goes to the area called Malga Mare. The Salto dei Cembri Waterfall is one of the most exciting to try: it has a length of about 100 m and it has a second pitch, from where you exit, it's a rather challenging climb.
